A History Of Stockings

Historically, stockings were made of woven cloth and the first knitting machines were created for the manufacturing of stockings. Prior to the 1920s, stockings were worn for warmth. Women, particularly during the pioneer days, wore long underwear (long johns) underneath their long dresses. In the 1920s, as hemlines rose, and churches were not heated, women began to wear flesh-coloured stockings to cover their exposed legs. These stockings were sheer, first made of silk or rayon (then known as "artificial silk") and after 1940 of nylon.

During World War II, the DuPont factory, which introduced Nylon, had to cease making nylon stockings, which created a black market for stockings. At the end of the war, DuPont announced that the company would return to producing stockings, but could not meet demand. This led to a series of disturbances in American stores known as the nylon riots until DuPont was able to ramp up production.

Modern day women’s stockings are commonly made using knitted wool, silk, cotton or nylon, and are available in many variations of style to suit anyone, for any occasion.

How To Wear Stockings

Stockings require suspender belts, also known as garter belts, to keep them in place around your thighs and are a classic favourite for lingerie wardrobes both in the US and UK. Today’s stockings are worn for a sexy, flirtatious and empowering look, whilst still having the same benefits as other hosiery for day or evening wear.

A new hosiery take on stockings include mock suspender tights, which give the appearance of stockings and suspenders although all one piece of hosiery, and strip panty suspender tights, which achieves the look of a suspender belt and stockings using cut-outs at the crotch and hips. The waistband and ‘straps’ that lead to the leg coverage are all attached. Another new form of stockings are bodystockings, perfect for the bedroom and a high fashion red carpet look, worn by celebrities like Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj and Kylie Jenner.
